Maharashtra’s revenue administration is developing model stamp-duty and property-registration offices across the state on the lines of passport offices, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said at a media interaction in Nagpur.
Stamp duty is a state charge linked to property documents and other instruments, while registration gives recorded legal status to eligible transactions. These services are used by homebuyers, property owners, developers and lenders during sales, transfers and other land-related dealings.
Passport offices are generally designed around organised document checks, applicant counters and defined service processes. Applying a similar model to registration offices would place greater focus on the public-facing experience of property transactions, where applicants often handle legal documents, fee payments and record submissions.
The proposed offices could give residents a more consistent setting for stamp-duty and registration work across Maharashtra. Clearer procedures and coordinated counters can reduce avoidable visits, support document scrutiny and make transaction-related services easier to access for people dealing with housing or land records.
The state is preparing the model offices, and the initiative remains at the development stage. Bawankule’s statement establishes the administrative direction, while the locations, design, operating process and implementation schedule remain to be set out.
