The Vadhavan Port project in Palghar came under review during a site visit by Vijay Kumar, secretary of the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, who assessed progress on the greenfield deep-draft major port being developed through Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL).
The review was held at Varor in Palghar district. Gaurav Dayal, chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and chairman and managing director of VPPL, was present along with Palghar district collector Dr Indurani Jakhar, district superintendent of police Yatish Deshmukh, VPPL chief executive officer Ravish Kumar Singh and senior officials from VPPL, JNPA and other agencies.
Officials briefed the ministry secretary on the current status and progress of the project. The review covered several major components of port development, including coastal reclamation works, construction of breakwaters, external connectivity, land acquisition and infrastructure and utility services.
The VPPL team also presented details of progress across different project components and outlined work planned for upcoming stages. The site visit included an assessment of ongoing activities at the project location, according to the report by Loksatta.
During the visit, Kumar also interacted with various stakeholders and heard their views. The report did not provide a revised completion timeline, updated project cost, cargo-handling target or details of specific decisions taken during the review.
The Vadhavan Port project is being developed as a deep-draft port, with the JNPA and VPPL among the institutions involved in its implementation. The review brought together the central ministry, port authorities, district administration, police and project officials as work continues on construction and associated land and connectivity requirements.
