Uttar Pradesh will launch a week-long Mission LiFE campaign on November 1, bringing government departments, district administrations, urban local bodies, gram panchayats, educational institutions and community groups into a state-wide programme promoting conservation and sustainable lifestyles.
The campaign, being organised as part of BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week, will focus on public awareness and participation-based activities linked to environmental conservation, prudent use of natural resources and everyday changes in consumption. Each day will centre on a different Mission LiFE theme, including healthy living, energy and water conservation, sustainable food systems, elimination of single-use plastics, and reduction of waste and e-waste.
The state government has directed departments to prepare theme-based action plans and conduct activities according to their respective responsibilities. District magistrates will coordinate implementation at the local level, bringing together government departments, urban local bodies, gram panchayats, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
Schools and higher educational institutions will hold Mission LiFE pledge ceremonies, eco-club activities, poster and essay competitions, debates and awareness programmes during the week. The youth welfare and sports department will organise yoga sessions, walkathons, cyclothons and community sports events as part of the healthy-living focus.
The health department will conduct awareness drives on physical activity, yoga, preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyles. Departments responsible for energy and renewable energy will promote energy conservation, the use of energy-efficient appliances and judicious electricity consumption. These activities place household and institutional energy use within the campaign’s broader environmental objectives.
Water conservation activities will focus on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, preventing water wastage and preserving local water bodies. The agriculture and food and civil supplies departments will promote sustainable farming practices, local and seasonal food, millets and traditional food items, alongside measures to reduce food waste.
The campaign will also include plantation drives and campus greening activities. Its implementation will depend on coordination between district administrations and local institutions, with urban local bodies expected to participate in activities covering waste, water, public awareness and local environmental management.
The programme is aligned with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s Mission LiFE initiative, which promotes lifestyle changes intended to reduce pressure on natural resources. In Uttar Pradesh, the campaign’s schedule links that broader initiative to specific activities across schools, public departments and local administrative bodies. The state-wide programme is scheduled to begin on November 1 and continue for seven days.
