UP Government Proposes Four-Lane Bridge Over Hindon River to Boost Connectivity

The Uttar Pradesh Bridge Corporation has taken a significant step toward improving the region’s infrastructure by initiating a survey for the construction of a new four-lane bridge over the Hindon River. The proposed bridge is set to enhance connectivity between several key areas in Ghaziabad, including Siddharth Vihar, Pratap Vihar, Indirapuram, and Vaishali, which are all experiencing rapid urban growth.

The new 300-meter bridge is planned to be constructed downstream of the Hindon barrage, addressing a long-standing problem faced by commuters who are currently forced to take lengthy detours through busy routes like the GT Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME), and National Highway 9 (NH9). The new bridge aims to ease these burdens, cutting down travel times and offering a more direct route for local residents. On Tuesday, a site inspection was carried out near the Hindon barrage in Vasundhara as part of the ongoing project. A government official shared that the inspection was a crucial step in finalising the details of the bridge’s design, and a preliminary report will soon be submitted to the government for further consideration. The official confirmed that the new bridge would be a four-lane structure designed to accommodate a significant volume of traffic, helping to alleviate congestion on existing routes.

Currently, traffic congestion is a growing issue in the region, especially around the four existing bridges near the Meerut trisection and Chhajarsi along the DME. With Ghaziabad’s trans-Hindon areas such as Indirapuram, Vaishali, and Vasundhara witnessing rapid urbanisation over the past 15 years, the demand for better connectivity has become more pressing. The bridge is expected to significantly ease the pressure on these heavily used routes, which are struggling to cope with the increasing population and traffic volume. The importance of a new bridge is underscored by the fact that an older bridge at the Meerut trisection, originally built over seven decades ago, had to be shut down in 2017 due to structural issues. It was reopened in 2022 after extensive repairs. During its closure, a second bridge was built to accommodate traffic, and in 2015, another new bridge was constructed to connect the Meerut trisection with Vasundhara. The fourth bridge, which is part of the DME and NH9 network, caters primarily to high-speed traffic. However, the current narrow, single-lane bridge near the Hindon barrage is mainly used for water level monitoring and is unable to handle the growing commuter demands.

Local residents have welcomed the proposed project, as it promises to ease their daily commute. Ram Shankar Singh, a resident of Pratap Vihar, expressed his excitement about the development, stating, “Siddharth Vihar and Pratap Vihar are among the most populated areas of Ghaziabad, yet we have to take long detours to reach Indirapuram and Vaishali. A new bridge will reduce traffic burden on existing routes and improve connectivity in the region.” The addition of this new bridge would not only enhance local transportation infrastructure but also improve overall traffic flow, ensuring that Ghaziabad’s rapidly growing areas can keep pace with the region’s development. By providing a much-needed alternative route, the project will offer residents a faster, more convenient way to navigate through this increasingly urbanised region of Uttar Pradesh. With the project still in its initial stages, the coming months will likely see more developments as plans progress and the feasibility studies are completed.
