Tata Motors Opens Vehicle Scrapping Unit in Kolkata
Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has opened its eighth Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) in Kolkata, significantly expanding its sustainable mobility footprint under the ‘Re.Wi.Re — Recycle with Respect’ initiative.
The facility can process up to 21,000 end-of-life vehicles annually, bringing Tata’s nationwide scrapping capacity to over 130,000 vehicles per year. The facility, operated in partnership with Selladale Synergies India Pvt. Ltd, is designed to safely dismantle vehicles of all categories and makes—including passenger cars, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and commercial vehicles—aligning with India’s vehicle scrappage policy that targets older, polluting vehicles. Inaugurated by Snehasis Chakraborty, West Bengal’s Transport Minister, the scrapping unit is the first of its kind in the state and the third in eastern India. “This is a welcome step towards building a cleaner and more efficient future for our people,” said Chakraborty. He added that the initiative will support adoption of newer, safer, and more energy-efficient vehicles, while contributing to the state’s economy.
Joining virtually, Kolkata Mayor and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim highlighted the environmental and employment benefits of the facility. Tata Motors Vice President and Head of Commercial Vehicles — Trucks, Rajesh Kaul, emphasised the company’s leadership in sustainable vehicle lifecycle management. “The inauguration of West Bengal’s first Re.Wi.Re and the eighth in India marks a major stride in scaling the country’s vehicle scrapping infrastructure,” he said. “This facility reflects our commitment to safety, compliance, and environmental stewardship through a robust circular economy model.” The Kolkata centre features fully digitalised operations, ensuring a paperless workflow and specialised dismantling zones for tyres, batteries, fuel, and oils. All operations comply with stringent safety and environmental norms laid out under India’s vehicle scrappage policy.
The company’s other Re.Wi.Re scrapping facilities are located in Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Surat, Chandigarh, Delhi NCR, Pune, and Guwahati, forming a pan-India network to streamline the responsible disposal of obsolete vehicles.
