Trichy is set to witness the construction of a six-lane cloverleaf flyover at Panjapur. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aims to streamline vehicular movement on the bustling Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH).
The proposed flyover, spanning 3.5 kilometres, will mirror the design of Chennai’s renowned Kathipara flyover. Land acquisition for the project has been completed, and a detailed project report is currently underway. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to accommodate the region’s rapid infrastructural developments, including the upcoming Tidel Park and a new wholesale market in Panjapur . Complementing the flyover is the construction of a four-lane semi-ring road connecting Trichy to the Trichy-Karur National Highway. This semi-ring road project, divided into stages, aims to decongest city traffic by providing alternative routes for commuters. Stage I will extend 19.9 km from Panjapur to Jeeyapuram via Thayanur, while Stage II will cover the Thuvakudi to Panjapur stretch, expanding it to four lanes with paved shoulders .
The region is also set to benefit from the newly inaugurated Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur. This Rs 246 crore facility is expected to ease congestion by replacing the overcrowded Central bus stand. The IBT will gradually take over operations from existing bus stands, ensuring the availability of essential amenities for commuters . Furthermore, the construction of the Periyar integrated vegetable market at Panjapur has commenced. Spanning 22.1 acres, this market will house 872 shops across three floors, including 32 office spaces for wholesale traders. Facilities will also include a 7,200 sq ft canteen and ample parking for vehicles . While these infrastructural developments promise enhanced connectivity and economic growth, the proposed Trichy Metro project remains on hold. Despite the completion of a detailed feasibility report in August 2023, the project has not been prioritized by the state government.
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has yet to commence work on the detailed project report, citing funding challenges and prioritization of other metro projects in the state . The cumulative effect of these projects is poised to transform Trichy’s urban landscape, fostering sustainable growth and improved quality of life for its residents. However, the success of these initiatives hinges on timely execution and effective coordination among various stakeholders.
