Thanjavur Corporation Approves 10% Rent Cut for City Shops

Thanjavur City Corporation has approved a 10 per cent reduction in rent for its shops after councillors raised concerns that the existing charges were exorbitant, while also seeking action on alleged violations at a commercial complex and the non-use of three drinking-water overhead tanks.

The decision was announced at a corporation council meeting on Wednesday by mayor-in-charge Anjugam Bhoopathy. She said the rent reduction had been approved through a resolution adopted at the meeting. The move concerns shops operated by the city corporation in Thanjavur town.

The council also discussed the functioning of a textile shop at the Thiruvalluvar commercial complex. DMK councillor S. Venkatesh said the shop was operating in violation of all rules and called for a committee to examine the matter and submit a report.

Another DMK councillor raised concerns about multiple violations in the parking area of the same complex. In response, the mayor-in-charge directed the town planning officer to look into the matter. The corporation has not disclosed the specific nature of the alleged violations or set out a timeline for the inspection in the reported proceedings.

The issues place the management of municipal commercial properties alongside the corporation’s responsibilities for regulating building and land-use compliance. The council discussion linked rent levels, shop operations and parking arrangements within the commercial complex, but the reported meeting did not provide details of the existing rents, the number of affected shops or the financial impact of the reduction on the corporation.

Councillors also raised a separate drinking-water infrastructure concern. Overhead tanks at three locations were reported to be without power connections and therefore not in use. The council said the tanks should be provided with electricity connections and put into operation.

The reported proceedings did not identify the three locations, the capacity of the tanks, the number of residents expected to benefit or the administrative agency responsible for completing the connections. No implementation deadline was provided. The next steps recorded from the meeting are the town planning officer’s examination of the Thiruvalluvar commercial complex and the provision of power connections to the three overhead tanks.
