Thane Teen Hath Naka Project Targets Traffic Relief
The Maharashtra government has initiated a major junction redesign at Teen Hath Naka in Thane, aiming to address one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s most persistent traffic bottlenecks. The intervention forms part of a broader strategy to improve urban mobility, strengthen regional connectivity and reduce congestion through integrated transport infrastructure rather than isolated road expansion. Foundation work for the Teen Hath Naka decongestion project has officially commenced at the junction where traffic from seven major corridors converges daily, creating prolonged delays during peak commuting hours. The location serves as a critical gateway linking Thane with Mumbai, Nashik, Kopri, Naupada, Wagle Estate and emerging transport corridors, making it one of the region’s most strategically important intersections.
According to officials, the project has been planned using advanced engineering studies and international urban traffic management practices. A comprehensive survey of underground infrastructure, including water pipelines, gas networks and utility corridors, has been incorporated into the design to minimise construction-related disruptions while safeguarding essential civic services. Such planning is increasingly viewed by urban mobility experts as essential for ensuring long-term infrastructure resilience in rapidly expanding metropolitan regions. Once operational, the Teen Hath Naka decongestion project is expected to substantially reduce vehicle waiting times. Authorities estimate that traffic signal delays at the intersection could decline to nearly 15 seconds, improving traffic flow for thousands of daily commuters and commercial vehicles. Reduced idling time may also contribute to lower fuel consumption and vehicular emissions, supporting wider climate resilience and air quality objectives for the city. The junction upgrade is being positioned within a wider transport investment programme underway across Thane. Planning continues for the Eastern Freeway Extension, which is expected to connect with an elevated corridor extending through Kheda Nagar, Anand Nagar, Saket, Gaimukh and Fountain Hotel.
The proposed network is intended to divert long-distance freight traffic arriving from Ahmedabad, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and northern Maharashtra away from densely populated urban roads, potentially easing pressure on residential neighbourhoods. Parallel infrastructure initiatives are also progressing, including the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The strategic corridor is expected to reduce travel time between the eastern and western suburbs from nearly two hours to around 20 minutes, significantly improving cross-city connectivity. Meanwhile, preliminary work has begun on a pod taxi network designed to strengthen first and last-mile connectivity between residential districts, commercial centres, transport hubs and healthcare institutions. Urban planners note that while expanding road infrastructure can improve traffic circulation, long-term mobility gains will depend on integrating highways, metro systems, suburban rail, emerging public transport technologies and pedestrian infrastructure into a unified network. Coordinated planning remains critical to ensuring that transport investments support sustainable urban growth rather than encouraging increased dependence on private vehicles.
As Thane continues to witness rapid residential and commercial expansion, the effectiveness of these projects will ultimately be measured by whether they deliver safer, cleaner and more efficient daily journeys while supporting inclusive and environmentally responsible urban development.
