The Thane Municipal Corporation has seized 99 kilograms of banned single-use plastic and collected ₹79,000 in fines after inspecting 75 establishments across several parts of the city, the civic body’s pollution control department said.
The enforcement drive was conducted jointly by the pollution control and solid waste management departments. Special teams inspected markets, commercial establishments, hawkers and shops in the Majiwada-Manpada, Mumbra and Naupada-Kaupra ward committee areas.
The action targeted establishments found selling or using prohibited single-use plastic items. The material was seized and penalties were imposed on the concerned establishment owners, according to the report.
In the Ghodbunder and Majiwada areas, civic teams inspected 35 establishments and seized 18 kilograms of plastic. Fines totalling ₹18,000 were imposed in this part of the drive.
In Mumbra, 10 establishments were inspected and 27 kilograms of banned plastic was seized. The civic body collected ₹15,000 in fines from the establishments involved, the report said.
The Naupada-Kaupra ward committee area accounted for the largest quantity of seized material. Teams took action against 30 establishments, recovering 54 kilograms of banned plastic and collecting ₹46,000 in fines.
The figures indicate that the Naupada-Kaupra inspections accounted for more than half of the total plastic seized during the reported operation. The three areas together accounted for all 75 inspections, 99 kilograms of seized plastic and the full ₹79,000 penalty amount.
The enforcement action places responsibility on the municipal departments dealing with pollution control and solid waste management. Their teams carried out the inspections and handled the seizure and penal action against establishments found with prohibited single-use plastic.
The Thane Municipal Corporation’s pollution control department said that action against single-use plastic is being conducted continuously. It also clarified that the campaign will continue in the coming period, indicating that inspections are not limited to the reported operation.
The latest drive covers a mix of commercial areas, markets, shops and hawker locations across multiple ward committee jurisdictions. The civic body has not provided, in the reported information, details of the specific plastic items seized, the legal provisions used for the penalties, or the number of repeat violations.
Further enforcement drives will continue under the Thane Municipal Corporation’s campaign against single-use plastic, according to the pollution control department.
