A 45-year-old pedestrian woman died and two people were injured after a car hit three people in the Kharegaon area of Kalwa, Thane, on Sunday morning, police said. The driver, identified as 31-year-old Abhishek Kadam, allegedly lost control of the vehicle after pressing the accelerator instead of the brake.
The deceased was identified as Shubhangi Patil, 45. Ayush Patil, 28, was injured in the crash, while Malashree Pujari, 32, sustained serious injuries. Both injured people are undergoing treatment at a hospital, according to the report.
Police said Kadam had travelled by car to Kharegaon to meet his cousin, who lives in the area. He was returning towards Kurla on Sunday morning when the accident occurred. According to the preliminary information from the police investigation, his foot landed on the accelerator rather than the brake while he was driving.
The vehicle then accelerated, and the driver lost control before it struck the three people on the road. Shubhangi Patil suffered serious injuries in the collision and later died. The report did not provide details about the precise location of the victims on the road or the type of road on which the crash occurred.
A case has been registered against Kadam at Kalwa police station. Police said further legal action would be taken in the matter. The case will determine the circumstances of the crash and the responsibility of the driver under the applicable law.
