Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has set 2028 as the deadline for filling all vacancies in the state police department, while announcing higher ex-gratia compensation for Home Guards and police personnel who die in service. The announcements were made at the Police Commemoration Parade in Hyderabad on October 21.
Reddy directed Director General of Police CV Anand to take steps to increase the ex-gratia amount for Home Guards who lose their lives while performing their duties from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The Chief Minister said the government had already issued notification for the recruitment of 5,000 police personnel and was committed to filling all vacancies in the police wing by 2028.
The Chief Minister also said the recruitment of 112 Deputy Superintendents of Police was unprecedented in the history of Telangana. He highlighted the appointment of transgender people as traffic assistants and said the move was intended to enhance their self-respect and dignity in society.
Reddy asked the police to handle cases involving women and children with greater sensitivity and said there should be no delay in delivering justice to victims. He added that ensuring women’s safety was not solely the responsibility of the police department and called on individuals across society to share that responsibility.
The Chief Minister also referred to the drug menace and appealed to the police to prevent young people from falling victim to drug abuse. He commended the Eagle Force for its efforts to curb drug trafficking and said the government was giving priority to strengthening the police department because maintaining law and order was crucial for the state’s development.
According to the Chief Minister, the police department was using modern technology to address emerging challenges, while retaining a human-centric approach. He referred to TG SAFE, established to act against food adulteration, as well as SHE Teams for women’s safety and the Stand With Her initiative to encourage social responsibility in supporting women. Spandana, described as a set of Immediate Protection Teams, was introduced to provide immediate protection to women and children during emergencies.
Reddy also listed welfare measures for police families, including the Young India Police School for children of police personnel ranging from Home Guards to the rank of DGP. Compensation for Head Constables and Assistant Sub-Inspectors has been increased from Rs 45 lakh to Rs 1 crore, while the amount for Sub-Inspectors has risen from Rs 45 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore. For Inspectors, it has increased from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore.
The compensation for officers at the rank of DSP and Additional SP is Rs 1.50 crore, while that for SP and IPS officers has been increased to Rs 2 crore from Rs 1 crore. Reddy described the enhanced compensation as a gesture of respect towards the families of police personnel who died in service.
During the commemoration, the Chief Minister paid tribute to police personnel who had sacrificed their lives while serving society, including Dev Singh, Pramod Kumar and Gajula Soumya. The recruitment notifications and departmental measures announced by the government will determine the progress towards the 2028 vacancy-filling deadline.
