The Telangana government has initiated plans to extend the Hyderabad Metro Rail network by nearly 40 kilometres, linking it to the proposed Future City.
This ambitious infrastructure expansion reflects the state’s vision to seamlessly integrate urban transport with futuristic city planning, enhancing accessibility and catalysing balanced regional development. The proposed metro corridor is expected to stretch from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to the Young India Skills Development University, located in the envisioned Future City. Officials confirmed that the extended line would run up to Mirkhanpet, a region earmarked for the city’s long-term spatial evolution. This connectivity push comes as the government prepares to transform nearly 30,000 acres of land into a next-generation urban centre — the Future City — conceptualised to attract high-value investments, promote skill-driven ecosystems, and decongest Hyderabad’s saturated core.
During a high-level meeting chaired by top government leadership, instructions were issued to fast-track the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR), inclusive of technical specifications, cost estimates, and financial modelling. The state intends to submit the proposal to the Union government, seeking central approval and co-funding under the prevailing 50:50 equity framework — the same model proposed for Hyderabad Metro’s second phase. The metro expansion is not only a physical infrastructure project but a strategic mobility solution aligned with the state’s green development ethos. Urban planning experts see the new line as essential for reducing the region’s carbon footprint, easing vehicular congestion, and promoting equitable access to economic zones. By embedding metro infrastructure early into the Future City blueprint, the government aims to build transit-oriented development (TOD) patterns from the ground up — ensuring that sustainability is not a retrofit, but a foundational principle.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will lead the metro alignment planning in collaboration with the newly constituted Future City Development Authority (FCDA). The dual-agency governance model is designed to ensure cohesive oversight over both spatial and transit development. This proposed 40 km extension adds to the metro’s Phase 2, whose DPR has already been submitted for central approval. That phase includes five strategic corridors totalling 76.4 km: Nagole to Shamshabad Airport (36.8 km), Raiadurgam to Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km), MGBS to Chandrayangutta (7.5 km), Miyapur to Patancheru (13.4 km), and LB Nagar to Hayathnagar (7.1 km). Officials revealed that the combined cost for the second phase stands at ₹24,269 crore, with negotiations ongoing in New Delhi for a funding nod.
State officials have been directed to maintain active dialogue with Union ministries, ensuring readiness for immediate rollout once approvals are granted. The urgency underscores Hyderabad’s rising demand for integrated mobility solutions, especially as the city continues to attract investments in IT, pharma, and defence sectors. Urban mobility analysts believe that connecting Future City to the broader metro network from inception will address key pitfalls observed in other Indian urban centres, where infrastructure often lags population growth. Embedding metro access into the Future City’s master plan also aligns with India’s Smart Cities Mission and Net Zero Carbon goals, which emphasise sustainable transit as a pillar of urban equity and livability.
If implemented as envisioned, the 40 km metro extension could serve as a national model for how India’s new urban frontiers can be built with sustainability and public transit at the core. As cities across India face mounting climate risks and unplanned urban sprawl, Telangana’s forward-planning could position Hyderabad as a leader in next-generation urbanism — where growth is not just vertical but also responsible.
