Telangana High Court Takes Action Against Construction Debris Pollution in Hyderabad Lakes

In a proactive move to safeguard Hyderabad’s ecological integrity, the Telangana High Court has initiated a Suo Moto Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to address the alarming situation of construction debris inundating two lakes situated in the Chandrayangutta region.

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that these lakes, Jalpally and Umda Sagar Lake, have been transformed into dumping grounds for debris accumulated from the ongoing metro project nearby. Championed by the Chief Justice’s Bench, this PIL gained momentum following correspondence from Justice Priyadarshani to the Executive Chairman of Telangana State Legal Services Authority. Citing concerns raised in a report published by the Times of India titled “Metro Project Kick Off Leads to Trespass Around Old City Lakes,” Justice Priyadarshani underscored the urgency of the matter. The report shed light on the grievances of local residents, who lamented the unchecked disposal of debris and sand encroaching upon the lake beds. Consequently, notices have been dispatched to relevant authorities, including the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, Revenue Department, and other Municipalities, signalling a concerted effort to combat this ecological threat. This legal intervention underscores the judiciary’s commitment to environmental preservation amidst rapid urbanisation, emphasising the imperative for responsible governance and sustainable development practices. As Hyderabad grapples with the challenge of balancing progress with environmental conservation, the High Court’s proactive stance exemplifies its dedication to safeguarding the city’s natural heritage.
