Hyderabad: The southwest monsoon is expected to reach Telangana between June 9 and June 13, according to weather experts. As in previous years, the monsoon is predicted to arrive in the state in the second week of June.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the monsoon will set over Kerala by May 31, with a model error of four days, and will progress to Telangana within two weeks thereafter. An official from the IMD noted, “IMD’s operational forecasts of the date of monsoon onset over Kerala during the past 19 years (2005-2023) have proved accurate, except in 2015.” Data provided by the department outlines the monsoon’s typical progression from Kerala to Telangana. In 2023, the monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 8 and reached Telangana between June 13 and June 17. In 2022, the monsoon hit Kerala on May 29 and advanced to Telangana between June 8 and June 15.
The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) reports that the state’s normal annual rainfall is 919 mm. This year, 6% of the total annual rainfall, amounting to 55 mm, has already been recorded during the summer. “The summer rains primarily resulted from extreme heat, which triggered precipitation across the state, leading to intense showers in Telangana,” stated an official from a weather forecasting agency. “Before the monsoon arrives, there will be occasional scattered showers in the evenings, while daytime conditions will remain dry. However, there will be no more heatwaves.”
The TSDPS report indicates that the state’s cumulative rainfall from June 1, 2023, to May 29, 2024, was 996.6 mm, exceeding the normal 919 mm by 9%. In the Greater Hyderabad area, the cumulative rainfall for the same period was 924.6 mm, surpassing the normal 825.0 mm by 12%. As the monsoon approaches, temperatures are expected to decrease to 38-40°C, with Hyderabad experiencing a drop to 35-37°C. Humidity levels are likely to remain high across the state, with scattered thunderstorms also anticipated.
The impending arrival of the monsoon is a crucial period for Telangana, significantly influencing agriculture and water resources. The state is preparing for the seasonal shift, which promises relief from the summer heat and a boost to the local economy. The strategic and timely preparation by the IMD and TSDPS underscores the importance of accurate weather forecasting in managing seasonal changes and their impacts on the region.
