Delhi Monsoon Plan 70% Desilting Completed

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced the completion of 70% of its desilting work in drains as part of its extensive monsoon action plan. In addition, the civic body is poised to set up control rooms in all 12 zones to effectively tackle waterlogging issues during the rainy season.

The MCD’s strategy includes rigorous maintenance of stormwater pumps, crucial for managing excess rainwater and preventing waterlogging in vulnerable areas. “The desilting work for most drains is being outsourced, with agencies utilising excavators, JCBs, and manual labour to remove silt, which is then transported to scientific landfill sites. Daily floating material is managed by cleaners,” an MCD official elaborated. To enhance monsoon preparedness, the MCD will establish a control room at its headquarters and in each of the 12 zones, ensuring round-the-clock operations during the monsoon season. Zonal heads have been instructed to stay vigilant during rains and to respond promptly with the necessary manpower and resources.

“In each shift, adequate manpower will be stationed to handle emergencies and address waterlogging issues. A comprehensive duty roster has been prepared, deploying required staff and machinery to manage any complaints,” the official added. During the monsoon, staff will be available 24/7 at all permanent pumping stations. The MCD has a total of 72 permanent pumps and 465 temporary pumps at its disposal. “Maintenance of pumps and desilting of sumps at pumping stations will be conducted before the monsoon onset. We are making exhaustive efforts to prevent waterlogging in all areas under our jurisdiction,” the official stated.

The MCD’s proactive measures aim to mitigate the challenges posed by the monsoon, ensuring smoother and safer commutes for Delhi’s residents. The completion of 70% of the desilting target reflects the corporation’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and public safety during the monsoon season.
