Tamil Nadu Women’s Safety Row Deepens After Deadly Home Invasion

Tamil Nadu’s women’s safety debate intensified on Friday after opposition leaders criticised Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s government over a series of reported crimes, including a deadly armed intrusion at a home in Tuticorin district and the alleged sexual harassment of a college student near Nagercoil in Kanyakumari district.

DMK leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin accused the government of failing to respond adequately to crimes against women. He alleged that the administration was in “sleep mode” and criticised the Chief Minister for prioritising social media activity over public safety. The allegations were made in a post on X, according to the report.

The criticism followed an incident near Sathankulam in Tuticorin district, where an armed gang allegedly entered a house while the family was asleep. Mary Regila was killed, while her husband and son were hospitalised with serious injuries, the report said. The gang also abducted the couple’s two daughters, who were rescued by police a few hours later.

Stalin also referred to reported serious offences involving minor girls in Tirunelveli and Velankanni. He cited a separate allegation involving Christopher, described as a district functionary of the ruling TVK, who allegedly sexually harassed a college student near Nagercoil. According to the report, the student was waiting for a bus when the functionary allegedly approached her on the pretext of offering help.

The allegations involving the TVK functionary remain claims reported in the source material. The supplied report does not include a response from the police, the accused individual or the state government to the allegations. Stalin demanded prompt, fair and thorough legal action, including measures to ensure justice for the family of the woman killed in Tuticorin.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also demanded stringent action against those involved in the alleged harassment case and called for an investigation without political interference. He questioned the effectiveness of the all-women Singappen Special Task Force, which was launched in June as an initiative to protect women.

Palaniswami asked whether the task force had gone into “hibernation mode” amid the reported incidents. He also criticised the government’s earlier claim that it would be the “Number 1 government in protecting women”, arguing that the allegation against a ruling-party functionary raised questions about the implementation of that promise.

The AIADMK leader advised women and girls to contact the police if strangers, including people claiming to offer help, approached them. He additionally urged women to carry self-defence equipment, saying the situation had created a perception that residents were responsible for their own protection.

The reported incidents have placed attention on the gap between public safety announcements and the operation of enforcement and response systems on the ground. In the material supplied, opposition leaders have called for action, but no details are provided on the status of the criminal investigations, arrests, charges or the government’s response to the criticism. Further developments will depend on police action and official statements concerning each reported case.
