Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: 17 Districts Face Heavy Rain and Storms

Tamil Nadu weather conditions are expected to worsen from October 21, with isolated very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds forecast across the state, Puducherry and Karaikal. The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 17 Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore and Tiruchi, until October 23.

The forecast points to widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu on October 21, with wind speeds likely to reach 40–50 kmph and gusts of up to 60 kmph in parts of the state. Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places between October 22 and 24, indicating that wet conditions may continue through the week.

For cities and expanding urban regions, the combination of intense rain and strong winds can affect road movement, drainage systems, construction activity and electricity networks. The forecast covers several districts in and around the Chennai metropolitan region, although the supplied report does not specify any separate city-level disruption advisory or rainfall total for Chennai.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in other parts of southern India. Kerala and Mahe are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from October 21 to 24, with isolated heavy showers during the period. Lakshadweep may see widespread rainfall, with isolated heavy showers expected between October 21 and 23. Thunderstorms and lightning are possible over Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep on October 21 and 22.

South Interior Karnataka is likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from October 21 to 24, with isolated heavy showers. North Interior Karnataka may experience isolated to scattered rainfall, while Coastal Karnataka could see scattered showers on October 21 and 22, followed by increased rainfall activity on October 23 and 24. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, with gusts of up to 50 kmph, are expected in parts of Karnataka.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema may receive isolated to scattered rainfall on October 21, along with isolated heavy showers and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Telangana may also see isolated to scattered showers, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on the same day. Strong surface winds are expected in parts of the region on October 21 and 22.

The forecast is markedly different for Delhi and the northeastern states. Delhi is likely to remain dry until October 22, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 32–34 degrees Celsius on October 21 and 22. The IMD has forecast no significant weather activity over northwest, central, eastern and northeastern India during the week. Most of the northeastern region is expected to remain largely dry from Sasthi to Vijaya Dashami on October 21, while maximum temperatures may remain 2–4 degrees Celsius above normal over the next five days.

Residents in the districts under the Tamil Nadu yellow alert have been advised to monitor official weather updates and follow local advisories, particularly during thunderstorms and periods of intense rainfall. The IMD forecast indicates that rainfall is likely to continue across several parts of south India until October 24, with the next weather updates expected to guide local precautions and response measures.
