Traffic congestion in Pune has significantly worsened after the traffic police suspended the use of challan machines and towing operations across key parts of the city. Roads including JM Road, FC Road, Satara Road, Sinhagad Road, Alandi Road, and stretches of the old city have been jammed with vehicles, with motorists parking illegally and violating traffic rules. The absence of traffic personnel at several junctions has exacerbated the problem, leading to longer commute times and increased road safety risks.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sandip Bhajibhakare explained that the suspension followed irregularities detected in traffic enforcement and that enforcement is now relying more on CCTV cameras and the Pune traffic police app. However, the lack of physical enforcement through challans and towing has diminished deterrence for violations.
Heavy vehicle movement linked to festival markets and ongoing infrastructure projects has intensified traffic woes. Residents like Sunil Pandit and Sagar More have noted travel times increasing by as much as 50%, with frequent sightings of violations such as triple-riding on two-wheelers and wrong-way driving.
Police officials have promised to increase personnel presence on roads beyond key junctions in the coming days. Until then, commuters face ongoing challenges managing the effect of reduced enforcement and worsening congestion.
