Tamil Nadu Plans Ropeway to Ease Kodaikanal Traffic
Efforts to improve access to Kodaikanal have moved into a crucial planning stage, with Tamil Nadu authorities expecting a feasibility assessment for a proposed ropeway corridor by September 2026. The project is being explored as a long-term mobility solution for one of the state’s most visited hill destinations, where road congestion, seasonal traffic surges and environmental pressures have increasingly strained existing infrastructure.
The proposed Kodaikanal ropeway would connect the foothills to the hill station through a high-altitude cable transport system designed to reduce dependence on the winding ghat road. Officials involved in the study said multiple route alignments are being evaluated, including options passing through the Kumbakkarai Falls region, to determine suitable station locations, engineering feasibility and passenger demand. Preliminary assessments indicate that the ropeway network could extend roughly 25–30 kilometres, including a shorter segment linking the foothills with Kodaikanal town. Travel time, which currently can stretch to nearly two hours during peak periods, could potentially be reduced to less than an hour if the project proceeds to implementation.
Urban mobility experts say the significance of the Kodaikanal ropeway lies not only in tourism but also in its potential to reshape travel patterns in ecologically sensitive hill regions. By shifting a portion of visitors away from private vehicles and buses, a cable-based system could help lower traffic congestion, reduce roadside emissions and ease pressure on mountain roads that require frequent maintenance. The state has appointed a public-sector consultancy to conduct the feasibility study through an open tender process. The consultant has already completed traffic surveys and baseline data collection across the corridor. The final report will examine technical viability, projected ridership, environmental considerations and financial sustainability before the government decides whether to proceed with a detailed project report. Transport planners note that ropeways are increasingly being considered in Indian hill towns where road expansion is constrained by terrain and ecological concerns. However, they caution that such projects must be carefully designed to avoid habitat fragmentation, visual impacts and excessive commercialisation of fragile landscapes.
Tamil Nadu is simultaneously examining similar cable-propelled transport options in other hill destinations, including Udhagamandalam. Together, these studies signal a broader shift toward exploring alternative mobility systems that can support tourism and local economies while attempting to reduce the environmental footprint of mountain travel. For now, the immediate focus remains on completing the feasibility assessment, which will determine whether the proposed ropeway can deliver faster, safer and more sustainable access to Kodaikanal without undermining the ecological character that draws visitors to the hill station.
