Chennai Rail Operations Face Safety Compliance Test
A railway safety breach involving the Yelagiri Express has prompted an internal operational review after the train reportedly crossed a stop signal while departing Perambur station in Chennai. Although railway authorities intervened quickly, replacing the locomotive crew before the journey resumed, the incident has once again drawn attention to operational discipline, signalling systems and workforce management on one of the country’s busiest suburban and intercity rail corridors.
The incident occurred during the evening departure from Perambur, when the train allegedly moved beyond a red signal—an occurrence classified in railway operations as a Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD). Such events are regarded as among the most serious signalling irregularities because they have the potential to disrupt planned train movements and elevate operational risk, even when no collision or injury occurs. According to officials familiar with the matter, the control office was alerted immediately after the signal violation was detected through railway monitoring systems. The train was instructed to stop, after which the locomotive crew was withdrawn from service and substituted with another operating team before the service continued towards its destination. Railway authorities indicated that the operational interruption was limited, although passengers reported a longer delay than officially stated.
