Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Strike Talks Begin Before Nov 11 Action

Tamil Nadu labour officials are scheduled to hold talks with electricity board trade unions on November 4, after nine unions announced a 24-hour strike over recruitment and staffing demands. The proposed action is scheduled to begin at 6am on November 11 and end at 6am on November 12.

The talks have been convened by the Labour Welfare Department following the unions’ strike announcement. The meeting is to be held in Anna Nagar, Chennai, under the supervision of the department’s deputy commissioner of labour.

According to a report by Dinamalar, the unions are seeking the withdrawal of a proposal to appoint 10,000 workers on a contract basis for five years in the Tamil Nadu electricity board. They are also demanding that vacant posts be filled, along with other demands that were not detailed in the report.

Nine electricity board unions are involved in the proposed strike. Their demands place recruitment arrangements and the staffing of the state electricity utility at the centre of the dispute. The report does not specify the categories of workers represented by the unions or the total number of employees who may participate.

The scheduled talks are the government’s immediate response to the strike notice. Labour officials will meet representatives of the unions in Chennai to discuss the issues raised by the organisations. The report does not state whether the electricity board management, the state government’s Energy Department or any other administrative body will participate separately in the meeting.

The proposed strike concerns a public utility responsible for electricity-related operations across Tamil Nadu. However, the report does not provide details of any contingency plan, essential-service arrangements or possible impact on power supply during the proposed 24-hour period. It also does not state whether the unions have agreed to suspend the strike pending the outcome of the talks.

The dispute highlights the operational importance of staffing decisions in electricity utilities. The unions’ opposition is directed at five-year contract appointments and their demand is for vacancies to be filled. The talks will determine whether the government and the unions can reach an understanding before the strike is due to begin.

The next immediate milestone is the labour department meeting with the union representatives in Anna Nagar on November 4. The status of the proposed November 11-12 strike will depend on the outcome of those discussions and any subsequent decision by the participating unions.
