Tamil Nadu Registration Department Crosses Rs 1,950 Crore in October

The Tamil Nadu registration department collected Rs 1,950 crore in revenue during October 2026, an increase of Rs 147 crore over the Rs 1,803 crore collected during the same month last year, while expanding digital registration services and launching an artificial intelligence application for court-case monitoring.

The figures were reviewed at a state-level monthly performance meeting chaired by Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration D Logesh Tamilselvan on Wednesday. The minister directed officials to address revenue leakages and ensure that the department meets its annual fiscal targets.

The department’s presence-less registration system, launched on August 17, had processed 2,46,260 documents as of November 3, according to the department’s review. The system allows certain transactions to be completed without citizens visiting sub-registrar offices in person.

The documents processed through the system include primary sale deeds for plots and apartments, Memorandum of Deposit of Title Deeds documents for banks and financial institutions, and payment receipts. These categories connect the digital initiative directly to property transactions and related financial documentation.

The department did not provide, in the information released about the meeting, a break-up of the October revenue by transaction type, district or instrument. The reported increase was presented alongside the review of digital adoption and pending registrations across the state.

During the meeting, the minister instructed district registrars to clear bottlenecks affecting pending registrations. He also directed officials to ensure that registered documents are handed over to applicants on the same day as registration. The instruction places document delivery and processing timelines alongside revenue collection as performance priorities for the department.

Before the review meeting, Tamilselvan inaugurated an AI-powered application for the registration department’s legal wing. The application is intended to track cases pending before the Supreme Court and high courts, assist officials in preparing counter-affidavits on time and streamline legal follow-up.

The legal application is part of the department’s broader digital push, but the information released did not specify the technology platform, implementation cost, number of cases covered or the process for monitoring its performance. It also did not state whether the application would be extended to other departmental functions.

The meeting was attended by Commercial Taxes and Registration Secretary J Kumaragurubaran, district registrars responsible for administration and audit, special deputy collectors handling stamps and assistant executive engineers. Their participation brought administrative, audit, stamping and technical functions into the review of registration performance.

The department’s next stated priorities are to plug revenue leakages, clear pending registrations, deliver registered documents on the day of registration and meet its annual fiscal targets. Further implementation details on the AI application and the performance of the presence-less system were not specified in the information released.
