Tamil Nadu Clears ₹376.65 Crore Plan for 2,880 Urban Projects

Tamil Nadu has sanctioned 2,880 urban infrastructure projects worth ₹376.65 crore across the Greater Chennai Corporation, other corporations, municipalities and town panchayats under the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) 2026-31, according to the municipal administration and water supply department.

The projects were approved at the first meeting of the common project sanctioning and monitoring committee. The Greater Chennai Corporation received the largest allocation, with ₹138.11 crore earmarked for 680 road improvement, relaying and related works. The package includes 595 bituminous road projects covering 136.57km, 58 cement-concrete roads spanning 8.47km and 25 interlocking-block roads extending over 3.06km.

Two gateway projects have also been approved for Chennai, including one leading to the airport and another at the VIP gate. The sanctioned works will be implemented subject to the conditions specified in their respective appraisal reports.

The committee has directed urban local bodies to ensure that road relaying does not raise existing road levels. This condition is significant for road works in built-up areas, where successive resurfacing can alter the relationship between carriageways, footpaths, property entrances and stormwater drainage. The order places responsibility on local bodies to carry out the works without creating a higher road profile.

Municipal administration and water supply additional chief secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi told the Times of India that the government had asked urban local bodies to submit additional proposals for roads, parks and playgrounds. He said funding would be sanctioned based on announcements made in the Assembly. Bedi heads the common project sanctioning and monitoring committee, which includes senior officials from the municipal administration and water supply departments.

The mission was announced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during the recent budget session with a proposed overall investment of around ₹1.5 lakh crore. Its stated framework brings urban infrastructure development, water-body protection, women and child safety, e-governance and public health initiatives under a common programme aimed at addressing infrastructure gaps and improving urban quality of life.

Under the funding arrangement described by Bedi, urban local bodies will contribute 10% of the project cost. The contribution is intended to support local ownership and participation in project implementation. The remaining funding structure for the sanctioned package was not detailed in the report.

Separate sanctions cover 1,513 infrastructure projects in corporations and municipalities. These include bituminous, cement-concrete and interlocking-block roads covering around 264km. Among the major allocations for bituminous roads are ₹9.73 crore for Coimbatore, ₹5.29 crore for Nagercoil, ₹4.96 crore each for Pudukkottai and Hosur, and ₹4.94 crore for Karaikudi.

Cement-concrete road projects have been approved in 24 urban local bodies, including Ranipet, Nagercoil, Vellore, Avadi, Tiruvallur, Kumbakonam and Trichy. A separate ₹22.82-crore water supply project has been sanctioned for Ambur municipality in Tirupathur district.

Town panchayats will receive 687 projects covering 149km of roads. The package also includes eight conversions of earthen roads into interlocking roads, a retaining wall at Adikaratti in the Nilgiris, the rejuvenation of 15 water bodies and the development of 17 parks. The next stage will involve implementation by the concerned urban local bodies in accordance with the project appraisal conditions and the committee’s directions.
