CIDCO Tightens Water Tanker Checks as Navi Mumbai Faces Scarcity

CIDCO has introduced GPS tracking for all 34 of its water tankers, CCTV surveillance at 11 major filling stations and an OTP-based digital monitoring system to improve water distribution amid scarcity across its nodes, according to an official statement reported by Mid-Day on Friday.

The City and Industrial Development Corporation said the measures are intended to make tanker operations more transparent, ensure equitable access and prevent the misuse of water supplies. The monitoring system will record tanker routes and delivery locations, while CCTV cameras at filling stations will help maintain daily distribution records.

CIDCO is also developing a comprehensive water portal that will combine GPS tracking with an OTP-based access system. Until the portal is launched, officials are maintaining daily updates through Google Sheets, the statement said.

The move comes as the corporation reviews water supply-related complaints and shortages across areas under its jurisdiction. CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Ashwin Mudgal has directed a series of review meetings to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and address supply-related issues, according to the statement.

CIDCO is coordinating with the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran to address shortages in Kalamboli. It has also corresponded with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation over the need for regular and adequate water supply. The coordination reflects the administrative complexity of tanker-based distribution, where the availability of water depends on the functioning of multiple agencies and filling points.

The corporation has prohibited the use of tanker water by developers for construction and development activities. Housing societies have also been warned against using tanker-supplied water in swimming pools. CIDCO said tanker supply to a society would be discontinued immediately if such use is detected.

CIDCO’s Vigilance Department is examining earlier complaints related to possible irregularities. The corporation said confirmed violations would attract penalties and stringent action, although the statement did not specify the nature or scale of the complaints under review.

The new system places record-keeping and route monitoring at the centre of CIDCO’s response. For residents and housing societies, the immediate impact will depend on how quickly the digital portal becomes operational, how tanker deliveries are verified and how the corporation coordinates with the MJP and NMMC in areas facing shortages. CIDCO has urged residents and societies to conserve water and cooperate with the administration while it works towards a regular, adequate and equitable supply.
