India’s strategic endeavors in maritime diplomacy have reached a new milestone with the recent approval of the Sittwe port agreement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Following the success of the Chabahar port project, India has secured the rights to operate its second overseas port, Sittwe, situated in Myanmar. The approval of the proposal allows India Ports Global Limited (IPGL), a company wholly owned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, to assume control over the operations of the entire Sittwe port, strategically located on the Kaladan River. IPGL, a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Deendayal Port Trust, has been entrusted with the task of equipping and operating container/multi-purpose terminals at both Chabahar and now Sittwe ports.
The significance of the Sittwe port lies in its integral role within the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project, a vital infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity between India and Myanmar. This ambitious project seeks to establish maritime links between the eastern Indian seaport of Kolkata and Sittwe port in Myanmar, utilizing the Kaladan river waterway to further extend connectivity to Paletwa in Myanmar and eventually to Zorinpui in Mizoram via road networks. By securing operational control over Sittwe port, India not only expands its maritime footprint but also advances its strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region. The establishment of alternative shipping routes to India’s northeastern states not only diversifies transportation options but also mitigates dependency on traditional transit corridors such as the Siliguri Corridor, addressing longstanding concerns regarding vulnerability and congestion.
