At the centre of the expansion is the proposed Delhi–Siliguri high-speed rail corridor, alongside multiple transit upgrades aimed at improving passenger movement in one of India’s most densely populated growth belts. Urban planners believe the scale of the programme reflects increasing pressure on existing transport systems as migration, industrial expansion and logistics activity intensify across eastern states.The emerging infrastructure network is likely to influence not only travel times but also patterns of urbanisation.
