Road Safety Push To Transform Hyderabad’s Dangerous Corridors
Hyderabad is preparing a comprehensive road safety overhaul as authorities identify several accident-prone black spots across the city for targeted engineering and traffic management interventions. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents, improve pedestrian safety and strengthen overall mobility across some of the city’s most hazardous transport corridors.
The proposed measures were reviewed during a high-level Road Safety Review Meeting held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre in Banjara Hills. Senior officials from the police, traffic, civic and administrative departments assessed accident data and discussed strategies to address locations with recurring crash incidents. Authorities conducted a detailed examination of black spots and blind spots where serious accidents frequently occur. The review also included pedestrian fatalities, hit-and-run cases, drunk-driving incidents and broader traffic safety challenges affecting Hyderabad’s road network.
A range of infrastructure improvements has been proposed to improve safety conditions. These include the construction of foot overbridges, installation of higher median dividers and guard railings, enhanced road signage, lane markings, zebra crossings and upgraded pedestrian infrastructure. Officials also plan to remove encroachments that obstruct safe movement along key corridors. Transport experts note that engineering-based interventions remain among the most effective methods for reducing accident rates. Improvements such as controlled pedestrian crossings, better visibility, physical barriers and safer road designs can significantly lower the risk of severe collisions while improving traffic discipline. Authorities are also focusing on traffic flow optimisation through redesigned U-turns, improved free-left turn management, enhanced street lighting and speed-control measures.
Urban mobility specialists believe these changes can simultaneously improve road safety and reduce congestion across busy intersections. Pedestrian protection emerged as a key priority during the review. Officials highlighted the need to discourage unsafe road crossings by strengthening median infrastructure and constructing foot overbridges at locations with high pedestrian movement and accident histories. The initiative also extends beyond infrastructure. Enhanced training programmes are being planned for Telangana State Road Transport Corporation drivers, focusing on safe driving practices, road safety awareness and accident prevention measures. To improve implementation and accountability, officials discussed creating a dedicated Project Management Unit to monitor road safety projects across departments. The proposed unit would track progress, coordinate agencies and ensure timely execution of safety improvements. As Hyderabad continues to expand and vehicle volumes increase, urban planners view road safety investments as a critical component of sustainable city development. The planned interventions aim to create safer roads, reduce fatalities and build a more resilient transport network for the city’s growing population.
