Hyderabad Road Network Set For Major Maintenance Expansion
Hyderabad is set to witness a major expansion in road infrastructure maintenance after the Telangana government approved Phase-2 of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) with an investment of ₹3,145 crore. The initiative aims to improve road quality, enhance urban mobility and strengthen transport infrastructure across the metropolitan region.
The programme will be implemented across the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation jurisdictions, covering approximately 1,045 kilometres of road network. The large-scale maintenance effort reflects the growing importance of road infrastructure in supporting Hyderabad’s expanding population, economic activity and daily commuting needs. Officials stated that ₹2,230 crore of the approved funding will be utilised for maintaining and upgrading bituminous (BT) and cement concrete (CC) roads already covered under the first phase of the programme. These works will extend across nearly 744 kilometres using conventional maintenance methods.
Urban infrastructure experts note that systematic road maintenance is increasingly becoming as important as new road construction. Well-maintained road networks help improve travel efficiency, reduce vehicle operating costs, enhance road safety and support smoother movement of people and goods across urban areas. The expanded programme comes as Hyderabad continues to experience rapid urban growth, particularly across emerging residential, commercial and industrial corridors. Increased traffic volumes and continuous urban expansion have placed greater pressure on existing road infrastructure, making long-term maintenance strategies essential for sustaining mobility. Transport planners also highlight that proactive road maintenance can help extend asset life cycles, reduce future repair costs and minimise disruptions caused by deteriorating road conditions. Regular upkeep is viewed as a critical component of resilient urban infrastructure planning.
