A RailTel server outage has disrupted online work across government offices in Pune, delaying certificates, scheme applications and document verification and leaving citizens unable to complete essential administrative tasks, according to a report by Pudhari.
The disruption affected the digital systems used by government departments to deliver services to residents. Applications for income certificates, residence certificates and caste certificates were among the processes reportedly affected, along with applications linked to various government schemes.
Officials and staff were also facing difficulties in registering applications, uploading documents and completing subsequent stages of processing because the system was unavailable. The outage therefore affected both citizens visiting offices and employees responsible for processing applications through the online platform.
The disruption came during the Diwali period, when many residents had planned to complete government-related work before the holidays. Citizens who arrived at offices for certificates, applications and document-related procedures reportedly had to wait for hours, while some were asked to return without completing their work.
The interruption has affected services that residents increasingly access through digital government systems rather than through entirely paper-based processes. When the online infrastructure is unavailable, even applications submitted at physical offices can remain stalled because registration, document uploads and verification depend on the same system.
The incident has also raised concerns about the dependence of public administration on a centralised digital service layer. Online systems are intended to make government services faster and more transparent, but a server failure can interrupt multiple departments at the same time when alternative processing arrangements are not available.
The report said citizens were demanding that RailTel resolve the technical problem urgently and restore services. They also sought an alternative arrangement that would allow government offices to continue serving residents during such outages.
The report did not specify the technical cause of the server failure, the number of affected offices or the expected timeline for restoration. No separate official restoration update was included in the supplied report.
