Pune Weather Turns Warmer After Heavy Rains

Pune: After several days of exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, Pune witnessed a marked improvement in weather conditions on Thursday as rainfall eased across most parts of the city, allowing temperatures to recover. The transition signals the end of an intense wet spell while shifting attention towards localised thunderstorms and continued vigilance in the surrounding hill regions, where intermittent heavy rain is still expected.

Most monitoring stations across Pune, including Shivajinagar, Lohegaon, Chinchwad and several urban neighbourhoods, recorded little to no rainfall during the day. Only a few pockets, particularly in the western parts of the district, continued to receive moderate showers. The improvement follows one of the most intense July rainfall episodes recorded in recent decades, which disrupted transport, affected civic infrastructure and heightened flood risks across the metropolitan region. Meteorological experts attribute the change to the gradual weakening of the weather systems that fuelled the prolonged rainfall. A well-marked low-pressure area that influenced rainfall over Maharashtra has moved away, while the offshore trough along the Konkan coast has weakened. In addition, the atmospheric shear zone responsible for sustained rain activity has dissipated, reducing the likelihood of widespread heavy showers over Pune city.

Although the immediate threat of prolonged rainfall has eased, weather specialists caution that moisture remains abundant in the atmosphere. As daytime temperatures increase, localised convection is expected to trigger short-duration spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, particularly during afternoon and evening hours. Such weather patterns are common during breaks in the monsoon and can still produce intense rainfall over limited areas despite generally favourable conditions. The changing weather was reflected in Pune’s temperature profile. Maximum temperatures climbed by several degrees across Shivajinagar, Pashan, Hadapsar, Chinchwad and other parts of the city as sunshine returned after days of dense cloud cover. Forecasts indicate daytime temperatures could approach 32 degrees Celsius over the coming days, while minimum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius. Despite the improving conditions, surrounding ghat regions in Pune and neighbouring Satara district may continue to experience isolated heavy rainfall before activity gradually moderates over the weekend. Authorities are expected to maintain close monitoring of vulnerable slopes, water bodies and transport corridors, particularly in areas that have already received significant rainfall this season.

The recent spell has already entered Pune’s weather records, with several July rainfall totals ranking among the city’s highest since systematic observations began more than a century ago. Cumulative seasonal rainfall has also remained well above the long-term average, underlining the increasing variability of monsoon behaviour. For urban planners and civic agencies, the episode reinforces the need for climate-resilient drainage systems, improved flood forecasting and stronger preparedness for extreme rainfall events. As Pune transitions into a more typical monsoon pattern, authorities will continue balancing recovery efforts with readiness for localised weather disruptions that remain a feature of the season.
