Pune Water Purification Plan Targets Future Demand
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated work on a long-term water purification strategy aimed at improving drinking water quality and expanding treatment capacity as the city’s population continues to grow. The move follows recurring complaints from residents about discoloured tap water in several neighbourhoods, prompting civic authorities to prioritise upgrades to ageing treatment infrastructure and prepare a comprehensive master plan for the next 25 years.
The proposed initiative seeks to modernise existing water purification facilities while creating a roadmap for future investments in water treatment and distribution. Civic officials believe the integrated approach will help strengthen water security, improve operational efficiency and reduce the risk of service disruptions in one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing urban centres. Recent inspections of the city’s older treatment plants revealed that ageing equipment has placed significant pressure on purification systems, affecting water quality in certain areas. Engineers have identified the need to replace outdated machinery, enhance filtration processes and improve treatment capacity to ensure that potable water consistently meets required quality standards. Particular attention is being given to the Parvati and Cantonment water purification plants, both of which serve large sections of Pune. Technical assessments indicate that modernisation of these facilities will be necessary to accommodate increasing demand while improving resilience against fluctuations in raw water quality during the monsoon season. Officials have also proposed the development of additional treatment infrastructure at the Cantonment facility to support future urban expansion.
The civic administration has been directed to complete planning and tendering processes within defined timelines so that infrastructure improvements can begin without prolonged delays. Alongside engineering upgrades, the master plan is expected to evaluate future demand projections, network efficiency, treatment technologies and operational management practices required to sustain reliable water services over the coming decades. Urban planners note that rapidly expanding cities require long-term investment in water infrastructure rather than reactive interventions. As residential development extends into newly merged areas and population density increases across established neighbourhoods, strengthening purification capacity becomes essential not only for public health but also for economic productivity and sustainable urban growth.
Experts also emphasise that resilient water systems are becoming increasingly important as climate variability affects reservoir conditions, rainfall patterns and raw water quality. Modern treatment facilities equipped with advanced monitoring systems can improve operational performance while reducing the likelihood of contaminated or turbid water entering distribution networks. The proposed master plan is expected to provide a coordinated framework for future investment, allowing the civic body to integrate infrastructure expansion with broader urban development objectives.
