Kodaikanal Water Crisis Deepens As Reservoirs Run Dry
A prolonged dry spell has pushed Kodaikanal into a worsening drinking water emergency, with municipal supplies reaching some households only once in seven to eight days. The shortage is affecting residents, hotels, restaurants and other businesses, while heavy tourist inflows continue to increase demand on already stressed water infrastructure.
The Kodaikanal water crisis highlights a structural vulnerability in a hill town that depends heavily on seasonal rainfall. The town has nearly 46,000 residents across 24 municipal wards, but its effective population rises sharply during tourist periods.Weekday visitor numbers are estimated at 5,000 to 6,000, while weekends and holidays can bring more than 20,000 tourists. That seasonal surge creates a significant mismatch between permanent infrastructure capacity and peak demand.Two important local sources, Observatory Lake and Keel Gundaru, have seen water levels fall sharply. Keel Gundaru has dried up, disrupting pumping operations and further reducing the municipality’s ability to maintain regular distribution.
The Kodaikanal water crisis is also exposing the economic cost of unreliable basic infrastructure. Some hotels and commercial establishments have turned to private tankers, paying around ₹4,000 per load. For businesses that require consistent water for kitchens, sanitation and guest services, repeated purchases can quickly increase operating costs.Urban planners say the problem extends beyond the current rainfall deficit. Kodaikanal’s water system has not seen a major new reservoir added in decades, even as its population, tourism activity and built environment have expanded. Limited underground storage in homes and commercial properties further reduces the town’s ability to manage interruptions. The situation also raises questions about how hill destinations plan for climate variability. Water systems designed around historical rainfall patterns can become increasingly vulnerable when dry periods intensify or rainfall becomes less predictable.
Municipal authorities are attempting short-term interventions. A deep well has been excavated near Fairy Falls to supplement supply, while officials are planning four additional borewells around Gymkhana Road. These measures may provide temporary relief, but they do not address the underlying dependence on seasonal sources. For Kodaikanal, the immediate priority is restoring dependable drinking water without putting additional pressure on fragile hill ecosystems. Longer-term planning will need to connect tourism capacity, water storage, groundwater management and new construction more closely. The next substantial rainfall may ease the immediate shortage. However, a more resilient water strategy will determine whether the town can withstand the next prolonged dry spell.
