A Pune water cut left residents in parts of Katraj without supply for two consecutive days after a planned rotational shutdown coincided with a citywide interruption linked to flow-meter installation at the Vadgaon water centre.
The disruption affected residents whose areas were already scheduled for a rotational shutdown on Wednesday or Friday. Water supply from the Vadgaon centre was suspended on Thursday to install a flow meter on a pipeline, resulting in consecutive days without water for some households.
The additional interruption came as Katraj residents were already dealing with scheduled water cuts amid drought-related restrictions. Road-widening work on the Katraj-Kondhwa road has also added to the area’s ongoing civic difficulties, according to a report by Punekar News.
The Pune Municipal Corporation’s water supply department had earlier clarified that areas dependent on the Vadgaon water centre would continue to follow one scheduled shutdown a week. The department said there would not be a blanket Thursday shutdown for these areas, indicating that Thursday’s interruption was linked specifically to the flow-meter installation rather than a permanent change in the rotational supply schedule.
Nandkumar Jagtap, head of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s water supply department, said the Thursday suspension was necessary for the installation work. He also said the existing rotational schedule would continue and that water supply would remain operational on Thursdays in the future.
The incident highlights how planned maintenance can compound the effect of an already constrained supply system when it overlaps with scheduled shutdowns. For households in areas dependent on a single water centre, the timing of maintenance work can determine whether a routine weekly interruption becomes a two-day gap in supply.
The municipal clarification means residents supplied by the Vadgaon water centre can expect the existing rotational schedule to remain in place, while Thursday supply is expected to continue after the flow-meter installation. The corporation did not indicate any broader change to the weekly shutdown arrangement in the information reported.
