Pune Uses Smart Technology For Safer Wari Routes

Pune Police have activated an extensive technology-led security framework ahead of the annual Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage, integrating artificial intelligence, GPS-enabled tracking and real-time surveillance to manage the movement of lakhs of devotees expected to enter the city. The upgraded monitoring system is designed to improve crowd safety, traffic management and emergency response as the centuries-old pilgrimage coincides with an active monsoon season and heightened public safety concerns.

Authorities have substantially strengthened deployment across the city, combining conventional policing with digital monitoring tools to oversee the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi processions. Senior officials indicated that the strategy aims to improve situational awareness while reducing response times during one of Maharashtra’s largest annual religious gatherings. A key feature of the security arrangement is the installation of GPS tracking devices across different sections of both palkhi processions. The technology will allow authorities to continuously monitor procession movement, estimate arrival schedules and assess crowd distribution along the designated routes. Real-time location data is expected to support better traffic regulation and emergency planning, particularly where large pedestrian movements intersect with urban transport corridors.

The city has also expanded its surveillance network by integrating hundreds of CCTV cameras into the Integrated Command and Control Centre. Live feeds will enable officials to monitor crowd behaviour, identify bottlenecks and coordinate field personnel from a central platform. Additional cameras mounted on the ceremonial chariots will provide continuous visual updates throughout the journey. Artificial intelligence has been incorporated into the monitoring system through facial recognition cameras and advanced video analytics. Officials say these tools will assist in tracing missing persons, locating vulnerable individuals such as children and senior citizens, and identifying persons of interest using authorised databases. Automated analytics will also monitor crowd density, detect abandoned objects, identify smoke or fire incidents and generate alerts if safety thresholds are exceeded. Drone surveillance and specialised mobile monitoring vehicles have been positioned along critical stretches of the pilgrimage route to provide aerial and ground-level operational intelligence. Anti-drone systems have also been deployed to prevent unauthorised aerial activity over sensitive locations, reflecting the growing role of counter-drone measures during major public events.

Beyond security, health preparedness has also received attention. Medical teams, intensive care facilities along the pilgrimage corridor and, for the first time, an air ambulance service at Pandharpur are intended to improve emergency medical response for devotees travelling long distances during the monsoon. Urban planners note that managing religious gatherings of this scale increasingly depends on digital infrastructure alongside traditional policing. With climate-related weather uncertainties and rising visitor numbers placing additional pressure on city services, integrated command centres, predictive analytics and intelligent transport monitoring are becoming essential components of resilient urban governance. As the pilgrimage progresses through Pune before continuing towards Pandharpur, authorities will continue monitoring conditions while urging devotees to follow official advisories. The operational experience is expected to provide valuable lessons for planning future large-scale public events in rapidly growing Indian cities.
