Pune Traffic Congestion Ranks Among World’s Worst Cities
Pune’s growing mobility crisis has placed the city among the world’s most congested urban centres, with traffic delays affecting daily commuters, economic productivity and quality of life. A global traffic assessment has highlighted Pune’s rising congestion levels, raising fresh questions over transport planning, public mobility options and the city’s ability to manage rapid urban expansion.
The latest traffic analysis places Pune among the top five cities globally for congestion, with commuters experiencing significant delays during peak hours. The findings underline a wider urban challenge as population growth, increasing vehicle ownership and expanding development zones continue to put pressure on existing road infrastructure. According to the assessment, Pune recorded an average congestion level of around 71 per cent in 2025. The average vehicle speed within the city remained close to 18 kilometres per hour, reflecting the difficulties faced by residents travelling across major employment, residential and commercial corridors. The report indicates that a 10-kilometre journey in Pune takes more than half an hour on average, with peak-hour travel times increasing further. Morning and evening commute periods remain the most stressful for residents, affecting workers, students and businesses dependent on reliable movement across the city.
Pune traffic congestion has become a key urban management issue as the city expands beyond its traditional boundaries. The pressure is not limited to road capacity alone but is also linked to uneven growth patterns, limited last-mile connectivity and increasing dependence on private vehicles. Reducing dependency on private transport and encouraging efficient shared mobility systems will be important for creating a more sustainable urban environment.
