Pune Rainfall Pattern Explained Through Western Ghats

Pune’s contrasting rainfall experience compared with nearby Western Ghats regions is a result of geography rather than distance. While hill stations and forest areas around the city receive intense monsoon showers, Pune’s eastern plains often remain comparatively dry. The difference highlights how terrain influences urban climate patterns and why understanding natural systems is important for future water planning and climate resilience.

During a recent monsoon spell, parts of the Western Ghats near Pune recorded heavy rainfall, while the city itself received only light showers. Areas such as Tamhini, located on the western slopes of the mountain range, reported significantly higher rainfall levels compared with Pune’s central weather station in Shivajinagar. The sharp variation between locations only a short distance apart is primarily explained by the rain shadow effect. As moisture-filled winds from the Arabian Sea move towards Maharashtra during the southwest monsoon, they encounter the Western Ghats, a mountain barrier that forces the air upwards. When the moist air rises along the western slopes, it cools and releases large amounts of rainfall. Locations situated on this wind-facing side of the mountains receive some of the highest rainfall in the region. Once the winds cross the Ghats and move towards Pune, much of their moisture content has already reduced, resulting in lower rainfall across the plateau region.

Meteorological experts explain that Pune’s location on the eastern, or leeward, side of the Western Ghats plays a major role in its rainfall behaviour. The city receives considerably less annual precipitation compared with areas on the western slopes because cloud formation becomes weaker after the air loses moisture over the hills. The difference has direct implications for urban planning. Pune’s water security depends heavily on managing limited rainfall resources, protecting natural catchment areas and improving long-term water management strategies. As climate change increases the possibility of irregular rainfall patterns, cities located in rain shadow zones may face greater pressure on water infrastructure. The rainfall variation also demonstrates the importance of preserving natural landscapes around urban regions. Hill ecosystems, forests and water catchments influence local weather systems and support broader environmental stability. Unplanned development in sensitive areas can affect drainage patterns and reduce natural resilience during extreme weather events.

Experts note that while Pune generally receives lower rainfall than the Ghats, weather systems such as depressions or low-pressure areas from the Bay of Bengal can bring widespread rain to the plains. However, even during such events, the mountainous regions often record higher precipitation due to their elevation and terrain. Pune rainfall patterns underline the complex relationship between geography and urban life. For a rapidly expanding city, future infrastructure decisions will need to account not only for population growth but also for natural climate conditions that shape water availability, flood risks and environmental sustainability.
