Pune Targets Safer Water With Plant Modernisation

Pune: Civic authorities have initiated plans for a long-term overhaul of the city’s water treatment infrastructure, directing officials to prepare a 25-year master plan aimed at strengthening drinking water systems, upgrading ageing treatment facilities and ensuring reliable supply for a rapidly expanding urban population. The move follows recent concerns over water quality in several neighbourhoods and highlights the growing pressure on essential urban utilities amid sustained population growth.

The decision comes after a review of the city’s ageing treatment network, particularly the Parvati water treatment facility, where ageing mechanical systems have been identified as a contributing factor behind recent instances of turbid water reaching consumers. Officials assessing the plant found that equipment operating beyond its intended lifecycle has reduced operational efficiency, reinforcing the need for comprehensive infrastructure renewal rather than temporary maintenance. Municipal authorities believe the proposed water treatment infrastructure strategy should extend beyond immediate repairs and instead establish a phased roadmap capable of serving Pune’s projected needs over the next quarter century. Urban planners have increasingly stressed that water security depends not only on expanding supply sources but also on modernising treatment facilities that ensure safe and consistent delivery to households.

As part of the proposed roadmap, priority is expected to be given to upgrading older treatment plants, including those serving key parts of the city, while accelerating work on an additional treatment facility planned for the Lashkar area. The proposed project has already been submitted to the state government for financial approval and is intended to significantly enhance treatment capacity as residential and commercial development continues across Pune. Infrastructure experts note that investment in treatment systems has become increasingly critical as climate variability, changing rainfall patterns and expanding urban settlements place greater stress on municipal water networks. Modern treatment technologies can improve operational reliability, reduce service disruptions and enhance water quality while lowering long-term maintenance costs. Officials have also been instructed to speed up tendering procedures and project implementation so that capacity augmentation does not lag behind the city’s development. Faster execution, they argue, is essential to avoid recurring quality issues and minimise risks associated with ageing assets.

For residents, improved treatment infrastructure could translate into safer drinking water, greater service reliability and reduced dependence on emergency interventions whenever ageing equipment fails. As Pune continues its transition into one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan centres, strengthening foundational civic infrastructure such as water treatment remains central to supporting sustainable urban growth, public health and long-term resilience against future demand.
