Pune Mundhwa Road Project Targets Traffic Relief

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated plans for a new Mundhwa link road connecting Keshavnagar Bridge with Mundhwa, aiming to reduce persistent congestion across the city’s rapidly expanding eastern corridor. The proposed infrastructure is expected to improve connectivity between major residential and commercial districts while supporting long-term mobility as urban development continues to intensify.

The proposed road will extend approximately 1.15 kilometres with a planned width of 24 metres and is estimated to require an investment of around ₹93 crore. Civic authorities intend to execute the project through a public-private partnership model, with the corridor designed to provide an alternative route for motorists travelling through one of Pune’s busiest growth zones. Transport planners believe the Mundhwa link road could significantly reduce traffic pressure at several congestion hotspots, including Mahatma Phule Chowk in Mundhwa, Shivaji Chowk in Keshavnagar and roads serving the Magarpatta township. These locations regularly experience heavy vehicle movement due to the concentration of residential developments, business parks and educational institutions in the surrounding areas. The proposal forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen east Pune’s road network by creating additional connectivity between Keshavnagar, Mundhwa, Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Amanora, Malwadi, Manjari, Ghorpadi and Koregaon Park. Urban mobility experts note that improving network redundancy through multiple road connections is essential for reducing travel delays and distributing traffic more evenly across growing metropolitan regions.

Officials indicated that the proposed corridor is already included in Pune’s Development Plan, providing the planning framework required for implementation. By creating parallel routes instead of relying on existing arterial roads, the project aims to enhance travel efficiency while improving access between residential neighbourhoods, employment centres and transport infrastructure. To accelerate project execution, the civic body plans to appoint specialist consultants responsible for preparing the detailed project report, conducting technical studies and managing tender-related activities. Experts say comprehensive planning at the design stage can help minimise construction delays while ensuring the road integrates effectively with surrounding infrastructure. The consultancy assignment will also cover planning for a wider transport corridor extending from Kharadi towards the Hadapsar railway station area. The proposal includes a new road alignment, an additional bridge across the Mula-Mutha River and connecting infrastructure intended to strengthen east-west movement across Pune’s expanding urban region.

Urban planners observe that eastern Pune has witnessed sustained residential and commercial growth over the past decade, placing increasing pressure on existing transport infrastructure. Without timely investment in new road links and multimodal connectivity, congestion could continue affecting economic productivity, commuting efficiency and environmental quality. As Pune advances its long-term mobility strategy, projects such as the Mundhwa link road are expected to complement public transport expansion while improving local accessibility. Successful implementation will depend on coordinated planning, efficient project delivery and integration with future transport investments that support sustainable urban growth.
