Pune Reservoir Storage Rebounds Despite Monsoon Concerns
Pune: Strong monsoon rainfall across the Western Ghats has significantly improved water reserves supplying Pune, easing earlier concerns over below-normal seasonal rainfall and reinforcing the city’s drinking water security. Reservoir levels have climbed steadily through July, prompting regulated releases from Khadakwasla Dam as authorities continue balancing water conservation with downstream flood management.
According to the latest reservoir data released by the irrigation authorities, the four reservoirs forming the Khadakwasla project have collectively reached more than 74 percent of their live storage capacity. The recovery places Pune’s water reserves close to the levels recorded during the same period last year and substantially ahead of storage figures observed over several previous monsoon seasons. The improvement follows persistent rainfall across the upper catchments of the Western Ghats, where several monitoring stations have recorded exceptionally high precipitation since the onset of the southwest monsoon. Hydrological experts note that these sustained inflows have transformed the city’s water outlook within weeks, despite earlier seasonal forecasts indicating the possibility of weaker rainfall associated with evolving climatic conditions.
With reservoir levels continuing to rise, Pune reservoir storage has entered a closely monitored phase. Irrigation officials have increased controlled discharge from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River to maintain operational safety while accommodating additional inflows from upstream catchments. Authorities have clarified that release volumes will continue to be adjusted depending on rainfall intensity and reservoir inflows. The stronger storage position also benefits neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad, whose water supply reservoirs are holding considerably higher reserves. Together, the region’s reservoir network provides critical support for domestic consumption, industrial demand and essential urban services, making careful reservoir operations vital during periods of intense rainfall. Meteorological observations show that rainfall has remained particularly intense along the Sahyadri range, with locations such as Bhira and Tamhini recording seasonal rainfall totals that now exceed several traditionally high-rainfall stations in Maharashtra. Urban planners say these shifting rainfall patterns underline the increasing importance of adaptive water management systems capable of responding to more concentrated and unpredictable monsoon events linked to climate variability.
The impact of the weather has also been visible within Pune city. Strong winds and heavy showers disrupted normal activity in several neighbourhoods, including incidents of fallen trees that required emergency response teams to clear roads and ensure public safety. While no major casualties were reported, civic agencies continue to monitor vulnerable locations as wet conditions persist. Forecasts indicate that heavy rainfall is likely to continue across the ghat sections in the immediate term before gradually easing over the weekend. Officials have advised residents to avoid entering the Mutha riverbed and remain alert to changing river conditions, particularly as Pune reservoir storage continues to increase.
