The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a strong warning against unauthorised hoardings, banners, and advertisements following the Bombay High Court’s directive to curb defacement of municipal areas. The move aims to ensure urban cleanliness and compliance with legal norms, particularly during the politically charged period surrounding the 2024 General Assembly Elections. In its recent order, PMC called on political parties to act responsibly and avoid erecting unauthorised advertisements, with strict legal action promised against violators under relevant municipal and state laws.
This decision comes after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) highlighted the growing menace of illegal banners across Maharashtra. The Bombay High Court instructed municipal bodies and the state government to remain vigilant against such encroachments, urging the Home Department and police to assist in enforcement. Following this, PMC began actively dismantling unauthorised structures, removing hoardings, posters, and kiosks across the city. As a result, Pune’s streets have started witnessing a cleaner and more organised visual environment, addressing both civic concerns and aesthetic appeal.
From a sustainability perspective, removing unauthorised advertisements aligns with broader goals of reducing environmental and visual pollution. Such hoardings often lead to increased waste and defacement of public property, requiring substantial resources for removal. By enforcing regulations, PMC not only upholds court mandates but also promotes a sustainable urban landscape. These efforts underscore the importance of balancing urban development with environmental consciousness.
This initiative also highlights the growing need for stricter enforcement of urban policies in Indian cities, where rapid development often leads to civic and environmental challenges. By prioritising compliance, Pune sets an example for other municipalities across Maharashtra to protect public spaces from encroachments. As the city prepares for election results, this crackdown signifies a step towards a more sustainable and law-abiding urban future.
