The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially commenced the second phase of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project, concentrating on the heavily trafficked stretch between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Sancheti Hospital. This strategic infrastructure upgrade aims to significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Pune’s core areas, directly impacting daily commutes and urban efficiency.
Following the successful completion of the initial phase, this new undertaking underscores Pune’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and enhancing public infrastructure to foster a more resilient, eco-friendly, and equitable city. This new phase follows closely on the heels of the successful conclusion of the first phase, which saw the widening of the one-kilometre stretch from Pune University Chowk to the RBI. That initial segment was executed in close coordination with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), primarily to facilitate the construction of the Pune Metro Line 3 double-decker flyover. The synchronised approach between different civic bodies is crucial for large-scale urban projects, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum efficiency in development.
According to data released by the PMC’s road department, the second phase of the Ganeshkhind Road widening project spans approximately two kilometres. This segment is significantly more complex than the first, primarily due to the substantial land acquisition requirements. The project necessitates securing land from 52 private properties along the route. As of now, only 12 of these properties have successfully handed over their land to the PMC, indicating a considerable challenge that lies ahead in the implementation of this vital infrastructure upgrade.
The pace of land acquisition is often a critical determinant of project timelines and can lead to significant delays if not managed effectively. The PMC will need to engage proactively with the remaining 40 property owners, ensuring fair compensation and transparent communication to expedite the process.
