Pune Road Repairs Rise As Monsoon Potholes Persist
Pune’s civic road network has undergone an intensive repair drive after monsoon damage created widespread pothole concerns across the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported completing repairs across thousands of square metres of damaged road surfaces in a month, but questions remain over the long-term durability of these interventions and the need for stronger urban road resilience.
The civic body’s road department has carried out repair work between early July and early August following repeated complaints from residents about potholes affecting daily travel, road safety and mobility across several neighbourhoods. The repairs covered multiple road zones, with areas including Dhankawadi-Ambegaon, Aundh-Baner and cantonment jurisdictions among those reporting significant maintenance activity. According to municipal data, different materials and methods were used depending on road conditions. Hot mix material, which involves asphalt prepared at high temperatures for road surfacing, accounted for the largest share of repair work. Additional repairs were completed using cold mix material, granular sub-base (GSR) materials and paving blocks in selected locations. The Pune pothole repairs programme highlights the scale of maintenance required in a rapidly growing city where intense monsoon rainfall frequently exposes weaknesses in road infrastructure. Urban mobility experts say repeated road failures often result from a combination of heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage, utility-related digging, ageing surfaces and increasing traffic loads.
The highest reported repair activity was recorded in the Dhankawadi-Ambegaon-Katraj zone, where several thousand square metres of road surface were treated using a combination of repair techniques. Other areas also received maintenance as part of the citywide response to monsoon-related road damage. However, civic observers and residents have raised concerns over whether the reported repair numbers represent permanent restoration or short-term patchwork. Road experts note that filling potholes provides immediate relief but does not always address underlying issues such as water seepage, weak road foundations or drainage failures. Without addressing these factors, repaired stretches can deteriorate again after subsequent rainfall. The Pune pothole repairs effort also reflects a larger challenge for urban infrastructure management. As cities experience more intense rainfall patterns due to changing climate conditions, road systems require improved planning, stronger construction standards and preventive maintenance rather than only seasonal responses.
Urban planners suggest that integrating better stormwater management, monitoring road quality after construction and coordinating infrastructure works between different agencies can reduce repeated damage. Transparent tracking of repair locations and follow-up assessments could also help residents understand whether repairs are temporary fixes or long-term improvements. While the municipal administration has reported significant progress in addressing damaged roads, the effectiveness of the repair campaign will ultimately depend on how well restored surfaces withstand future weather events and daily urban traffic. Building more resilient road infrastructure will remain essential as Pune continues to expand and mobility demands increase.
