Pune HCMTR Corridor Gets New Implementation Push

Pune’s long-pending High Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) project has entered a renewed implementation phase after the Pune Municipal Corporation began appointing consultants for technical studies, land acquisition and statutory approvals. The move aims to revive a major mobility corridor that could reshape traffic movement across the city while addressing growing pressure on Pune’s urban transport network.

The civic body has initiated separate processes to appoint technical consultants and agencies responsible for land-related work as preparations begin for advancing the Pune HCMTR project. The appointments will support updated engineering studies, environmental assessments, surveys and legal approvals required before construction can begin. The project, originally planned more than a decade ago, faced repeated delays due to challenges involving land availability, regulatory clearances and changing transport priorities. With Pune experiencing rapid population growth, increased vehicle ownership and expanding development corridors, urban planners say the need for integrated mobility infrastructure has become more urgent. The revised Pune HCMTR project now includes an expanded alignment of around 43 kilometres, compared with the earlier 35.96-kilometre proposal. The updated route is designed as an elevated ring corridor connecting key areas of the city while adding missing links to improve movement between northern, western and eastern parts of Pune.

Officials have indicated that the alignment has undergone modifications at multiple locations to reduce land acquisition requirements and improve execution feasibility. Fresh technical evaluations are being carried out because earlier studies prepared over a decade ago no longer reflect current land patterns, infrastructure expansion and interactions with newer transport systems such as Metro corridors. The updated assessment will include drone-based surveys, revised land records, environmental evaluations and engineering reviews at locations where the corridor intersects with major roads and existing mobility infrastructure. Authorities are also examining available government land parcels to reduce acquisition challenges and accelerate project preparation. Urban transport experts believe that large-scale mobility projects must be evaluated not only through their capacity to move vehicles but also through their impact on public transport accessibility, emissions reduction and urban liveability. A well-integrated high-capacity corridor could help reduce congestion on overloaded roads, improve travel reliability and support more efficient movement of buses and emergency services.

The proposed corridor includes a six-lane elevated structure with a centrally located Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). By combining road capacity with dedicated public transport infrastructure, planners aim to create a system that supports diverse mobility needs rather than relying solely on private vehicles. Once completed, the route is expected to connect important urban districts including Bopodi, Aundh, Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Hadapsar, Mundhwa and Vishrantwadi. The corridor is also planned to complement Pune’s expanding Metro network and strengthen connections across different parts of the city. The civic administration has indicated that updated technical work could be completed within a few months, with further project execution decisions expected after the review process. The next phase will determine whether the long-awaited corridor can move from planning documents into construction while balancing mobility needs, environmental considerations and responsible urban growth.
