Pune road repairs and funding came under scrutiny at the Pune Municipal Corporation’s general body meeting on Thursday after members raised the death of a 16-year-old girl in an accident on Katraj-Kondhwa Road. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure directed the administration to provide a detailed clarification on road infrastructure and maintenance, but the ensuing response did not address the four specific points she had raised, according to a report by Loksatta.
The issue was raised at the beginning of the meeting, which was held at the Hindavi Swarajya auditorium in the civic body’s new building under Nagpure’s chairpersonship. Members from the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena (Thackeray) questioned the administration over the accident and the condition of Katraj-Kondhwa Road.
City engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar appeared before the general body to present the administration’s response. Before the clarification began, Nagpure instructed the administration to address four questions concerning road infrastructure in areas recently incorporated into the municipal corporation.
The mayor sought details on the funds required to provide roads, footpaths and other essential facilities in the newly included villages. She also asked how much money had been allocated for these works in the civic body’s current-year budget.
The other two questions concerned implementation capacity and existing roads. Nagpure asked whether it would be possible to construct all the required roads at the same time and sought an estimate of the funds needed to repair roads that already exist.
According to the report, Pawaskar’s clarification lasted about 45 minutes but did not directly address the four issues identified by the mayor. The meeting therefore saw the administration’s response questioned in relation to the mayor’s directions.
The discussion links the Katraj-Kondhwa Road accident to wider questions about the pace of road construction and repair in areas added to the Pune Municipal Corporation. It also brought budget allocations, the scale of outstanding infrastructure work and the feasibility of completing road projects simultaneously into the general body’s proceedings.
