Pune Road Corridor Projects Gain Infrastructure Push

Pune: Three major highway and urban mobility projects valued at nearly ₹18,100 crore are set to enter the construction phase in the Pune metropolitan region, with the foundation ceremony scheduled for 18 July. The proposed road corridors are expected to improve connectivity across key industrial and residential zones while addressing long-standing traffic congestion that has accompanied the city’s rapid economic and urban expansion.

The projects include a Pune road corridor projects package comprising a 53-kilometre six-lane stretch between Kharadi Junction and the Shirur bypass, a 31.5-kilometre corridor connecting Hadapsar and Yavat, and a 53.2-kilometre route linking Talegaon, Chakan and Shikrapur. Together, these corridors are intended to strengthen regional mobility and improve links between Pune’s logistics, manufacturing and employment centres. The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will oversee implementation of the projects under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, with construction responsibilities allocated through competitive contracting. Officials have indicated that preparatory coordination is underway between civic authorities and traffic management agencies to minimise disruption once construction activities begin.

The Kharadi–Shirur section represents the first phase of the proposed Pune–Sambhajinagar Greenfield Expressway, a strategic corridor designed to enhance regional connectivity across Maharashtra. Plans include an elevated stretch of approximately 35 kilometres, making it one of the country’s longest elevated road corridors. Transport planners believe the project could significantly reduce travel time while supporting freight movement between Pune and emerging economic centres. The Hadapsar–Yavat project proposes widening the existing road to six lanes, including an elevated section across much of the alignment. Provision has also been made to accommodate future Pune Metro expansion, reflecting a growing emphasis on integrating road and mass transit infrastructure rather than planning each network independently. Urban mobility experts say such multimodal planning is essential for reducing long-term congestion and improving commuter options. Meanwhile, the Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur corridor will be upgraded to four lanes with a substantial elevated segment to improve access to one of Maharashtra’s largest industrial clusters. The route serves manufacturing, automobile and logistics hubs that generate significant commercial traffic, making capacity enhancement important for sustaining industrial productivity and regional investment.

While the Pune road corridor projects promise improved mobility and economic benefits, urban planners caution that expanding highway infrastructure must be complemented by sustainable transport policies. Investment in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, cycling networks and environmentally sensitive construction practices will be critical to ensuring that road expansion does not encourage unchecked private vehicle dependence or increase carbon emissions. Experts also emphasise the importance of effective traffic management during construction, particularly in densely populated areas where roadworks can disrupt daily commuting and commercial activity. Coordinated planning between civic agencies, transport authorities and contractors will play a key role in limiting inconvenience for residents. As Pune continues to evolve into a major metropolitan and industrial hub, these infrastructure investments are expected to reshape regional connectivity. Their long-term success, however, will depend on balancing faster mobility with resilient urban planning, integrated transport systems and sustainable land-use development.
