Pune Reservoir Storage Trails Last Monsoon Despite Rains

Pune: Water storage across the Khadakwasla reservoir system, the primary source of drinking water for Pune, has risen sharply following recent monsoon rainfall but remains around 4 TMC below the level recorded at the same time last year. The latest figures underline the importance of sustained rainfall and careful reservoir management to ensure long-term urban water security for one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing cities.

Recent showers across the reservoir catchments have significantly improved storage in the four-dam network comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar. Combined storage has reached nearly 16.80 TMC, representing more than half of the system’s total capacity. Although the increase offers relief after earlier concerns over low inflows, water availability continues to lag behind the corresponding period of the previous monsoon season. The variation reflects uneven rainfall across the catchment areas feeding the reservoir network. While Khadakwasla and nearby regions have received higher precipitation than last year, rainfall has remained comparatively lower in the upper catchments of Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar. Since these upstream reservoirs contribute substantially to Pune’s overall water supply, below-average rainfall in these locations has limited the pace of storage recovery despite heavy showers elsewhere. Urban water experts note that the Khadakwasla dam system plays a critical role in supplying potable water to Pune and supporting surrounding settlements. Reservoir levels directly influence municipal water planning, irrigation releases and seasonal water allocation, making continuous monitoring essential throughout the monsoon period.

Officials continue to regulate water releases through the canal network based on operational requirements while closely tracking rainfall trends across the Western Ghats. Hydrologists explain that reservoir inflows depend not only on rainfall intensity but also on its geographical distribution, soil saturation and runoff patterns. Localised heavy rainfall may temporarily raise water levels in individual reservoirs without producing uniform gains across the entire storage network. Climate specialists suggest that increasingly erratic monsoon behaviour is making reservoir management more complex. Alternating periods of intense rainfall and prolonged dry spells require greater reliance on real-time hydrological data, integrated watershed management and efficient urban water governance. Investments in catchment conservation, rainwater harvesting and demand-side water management are becoming increasingly important to complement reservoir storage. For a rapidly expanding metropolitan region like Pune, ensuring reliable drinking water extends beyond seasonal rainfall. Population growth, urban expansion and changing climate patterns are placing additional pressure on existing infrastructure, reinforcing the need for diversified water sources and resilient planning strategies.

With further monsoon activity expected over the coming weeks, authorities will continue assessing inflows before taking operational decisions on storage and releases. The performance of the Khadakwasla dam network during the remainder of the rainy season will be closely watched as it determines water availability for households, industries and civic services in the months ahead.
