A Pune police constable has been suspended after allegedly driving a car at high speed against the direction of traffic while wearing her police uniform and abusing motorists and citizens in Shewalewadi, according to a report by Sakal.
The action was taken against Ashwini Kekan, a police constable posted at Kale Padal police station. The suspension order was issued by Jivan Beniwal, deputy commissioner of police for Pune Police Zone 6, the report said.
Kekan was on minor leave on October 26 and 27. During this period, she allegedly wore her official uniform and drove a car without a number plate on a public road in the Shewalewadi area. The vehicle was reportedly being driven at high speed in the wrong direction of traffic.
According to the report, the car cut across vehicles travelling in the opposite direction before hitting the pavement. Kekan also allegedly abused other motorists and citizens during the incident.
A video of the episode was circulated on social media. The footage prompted attention to the alleged traffic violations and the conduct of the police employee while she was wearing the uniform. The incident occurred on a public road, bringing both road-safety concerns and questions about the responsibilities attached to visible police identification.
A case has been registered at Manjari police station in connection with the alleged violation of traffic rules. The report did not provide details of the specific legal sections invoked in the case.
Following an inquiry, the police department held Kekan responsible for conduct that allegedly tarnished the image of the force and suspended her from government service with immediate effect. The suspension order was issued after the inquiry, according to Sakal.
The case combines a traffic-safety violation with departmental action against a serving police employee. The reported use of a vehicle without a number plate, driving against traffic and the alleged collision with the pavement are now part of the police inquiry and criminal case recorded by Manjari police station. Further proceedings will depend on the departmental and legal processes already initiated.
