In a significant move towards easing Pune’s traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated the land acquisition process for a crucial 5.7 km stretch of the Inner Ring Road. This stretch, part of a larger 128.08 km road network envisioned by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is set to be a game-changer for urban transport. The PMC’s portion, located in Lohegaon, will enhance connectivity between Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, alleviating traffic bottlenecks, particularly in the rapidly urbanising areas along Nagar Road and Wagholi.

This part of the project forms a key component of a multi-phase development aimed at reducing congestion within the city’s core. The PMC will be responsible for the development of the 5.7 km stretch of the road, and upon completion, it will be handed over to PMRDA for integration into the broader urban infrastructure. Despite challenges such as land acquisition, the project is designed to be executed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The 65-metre-wide road is expected to dramatically reduce the long hours spent in traffic jams, providing relief to both commuters and industrial vehicle traffic. With heavy vehicle volumes steadily increasing in Pune, this project is poised to transform the daily commute for thousands.

The Land Acquisition Process: Challenges and Progress

To facilitate the construction of the Inner Ring Road, the PMC is in the process of acquiring 3.7 lakh square metres of land within Lohegaon. However, the road ahead seems challenging. Of the required land, only 20,000 square metres have been successfully acquired thus far, with 140 private landowners affected by the project. As per the report, despite repeated requests to landowners to voluntarily hand over their land, the process remains slow, with only a handful of owners cooperating. The road department has appointed Jitendra Singh as the contractor for land acquisition, and they have already initiated work on the acquired land under a PPP model. Meanwhile, the Pune standing committee is expected to provide government approval for the land acquisition soon.

Land acquisition for infrastructure projects is often a significant challenge, and this project is no exception.
