Pune Municipal Corporation will spend nearly Rs 60 lakh on the next phase of repairs and conservation at the historic Nanawada building, with work expected to begin soon after the civic body completed the tender process. The package is intended to protect the structure from water damage and preserve its original architectural character.
The planned works include repairs to the building’s façade, measures to stop water leakage from the roof, installation of wooden chajjas over windows, repairs to the record room and repainting of the premises. The civic body’s building and heritage departments have completed the tender process for the works, according to Standing Committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale.
The estimated cost of the package is Rs 59,94,742. The estimate includes Rs 9,14,361 in Goods and Services Tax. Two bids were received for the work and both bidders were found eligible, the report said.
The proposed repairs follow earlier, phased interventions undertaken by the municipal corporation to conserve Nanawada and retain its original form. The latest package will focus on pending work on the façade and the stone-built sections of the historic property, along with repairs required inside the building.
Roof leakage has been identified as a key concern, particularly during the monsoon. Continued seepage could damage the building’s construction, while exposure to rain could accelerate deterioration of the façade and other architectural elements. The planned waterproofing work on the wooden window chajjas is intended to provide additional protection to the exterior.
The repair package also covers the record room, a part of the building with an administrative and archival function. Repairs and repainting are expected to improve the condition of the premises while the structural conservation work is carried out. The civic body’s stated objective is to prevent further wear while maintaining the building’s original architectural features.
The account head approval for the work was obtained on June 29, 2026, and the required administrative approval for the tender process has also been granted. With the tender stage complete and both participating bidders declared eligible, the municipal corporation is expected to move to execution of the approved works.
Nanawada is regarded as an important part of Pune’s historical and cultural built heritage. The ongoing conservation effort places responsibility on the civic administration to balance functional repairs with the protection of the building’s historic appearance. The next milestone is the start of the approved façade, roof, record-room and finishing works.
