Pune Moshi Landfill Partly Resumes Waste Operations
Pune has resumed restricted waste disposal operations at the Moshi landfill nearly a week after a fatal landfill collapse claimed nine lives, marking the first step towards restoring municipal waste services while authorities continue safety assessments and accountability proceedings. The phased reopening reflects the challenge of maintaining uninterrupted urban sanitation without compromising worker safety, particularly as extreme monsoon conditions expose vulnerabilities in ageing waste management infrastructure.
Officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) confirmed that only selected waste streams are currently being accepted at the Moshi facility. Medical waste, organic kitchen waste and material linked to compressed natural gas processing are being transported to designated disposal zones situated away from the location where the landfill slope failure occurred earlier this month. The Moshi landfill remains only partially operational because debris from the collapsed waste mound and the damaged waste-to-energy facility continues to obstruct internal access roads. Engineering teams are engaged in clearing mixed construction debris and accumulated refuse before normal vehicle movement can resume across the site. Municipal officials overseeing operations said restoration work is progressing on priority, with the objective of reopening additional sections once safety conditions improve. Until then, a substantial share of Pune’s daily municipal solid waste continues to be redirected to alternate disposal facilities, including sites managed in Dehu and the Khadki Cantonment area, ensuring uninterrupted collection services across the city. Pune generates approximately 1,400 to 1,500 tonnes of municipal waste each day, making uninterrupted disposal operations critical for maintaining public hygiene and preventing secondary environmental risks.
Urban planning experts note that disruptions to landfill operations can quickly affect collection schedules, increase transportation costs and place additional pressure on neighbouring waste handling facilities. The collapse has also intensified scrutiny of landfill engineering practices and operational oversight. Administrative proceedings are underway against officials and project stakeholders responsible for supervising activities at the site. Authorities confirmed that responses to show-cause notices have been received and are under examination before decisions on disciplinary or legal action are taken. The incident has reignited broader discussions about the management of legacy waste accumulated over decades at urban landfill sites. Environmental specialists argue that ageing waste mounds require continuous geotechnical monitoring, particularly during periods of intense rainfall when water infiltration can destabilise landfill slopes. They also emphasise that waste-to-energy projects located within or adjacent to landfill zones must incorporate stronger structural safeguards and comprehensive risk assessments.
The Moshi landfill tragedy has highlighted the growing need for climate-resilient waste infrastructure as increasingly unpredictable monsoon events place additional stress on municipal facilities.
